Portrait background removal: what to expect

This tool uses the MODNet portrait-matting model to estimate the outline of a person. Use one clearly visible person with good lighting. It is not designed for product photos, animals or arbitrary object cutouts.

The model and runtime are downloaded the first time you process a portrait. Images are processed in the browser and are not sent to a remote inference service. Slow or low-memory devices may be unable to run the model. Review hair and fine edges before using the transparent PNG.

Example portrait: NASA astronaut Eileen Collins, public-domain NASA photograph.

How to use portrait background removal

  1. Choose your JPG, PNG or WebP files, or try the portrait example.
  2. Adjust the options. Settings apply to each image in your batch.
  3. Process, review the output dimensions and size, then download your files.

Good to know

Are my images uploaded?

No. Image processing runs in this browser. Images are not sent to ResizeNova. Font requests may contact Google Fonts; no image content is included.

Which formats can I use?

Static JPG, PNG and WebP are supported. Animated images, SVG, HEIC and RAW are not supported in this version. Browser re-encoding does not preserve EXIF metadata or original color profiles.

Can I process a batch?

Yes, up to 5 images per batch. Files are processed sequentially to limit memory use. Crop coordinates apply separately to every original image.

Will the image quality change?

Resizing and lossy encoding can change detail. Check the preview before using the result. A very small KB limit may need lower dimensions. PNG uses lossless encoding and ignores JPEG quality controls.
